Sweden’s double Olympic champion Anette Norberg moved to the top of the rankings by herself through two victories in Monday’s play at the Capital One World Women’s Curling Championship in Esbjerg, Denmark.

She followed up her 7-5 win over China with a 10-7 victory over Korea in Monday evening’s eighth session of round-robin play. This gives her a record of four wins and one loss so far.

In the morning session, China’s Bingyu Wang, whose Sunday game against Korea had attracted a home television audience in excess of 20 million viewers, had beaten Anna Kubeskova and her Czech Republic team by 9-3.

Leading by example with some great shots, Scotland’s Anna Sloan led her team to two victories on Monday. She beat Canada’s Amber Holland by 7-3 before toppling defending champion Andrea Scheopp’s Germany by 9-3, without being taken to the tenth end in either game.

Speaking after her second win of the day, Sloan said, “it’s been a really good day. If someone had said to us we were going to get two wins today, we’d have been more than happy. All the teams out here are pretty strong, so we’ve just to keep going and whoever we play we mustn’t let it affect us”.

The defeat by Scotland was Canada’s third straight loss, but they later stopped the rot with a 7-5 win over Norway’s Linn Githmark. Afterwards, a relieved Canadian skip Holland said, “that was very important. We know we need wins, that’s what this game is all about. That was good to finish the day with a win, we played a lot better – not that we didn’t play well this morning, we just didn’t get some of the breaks that we needed”.

Hosts Denmark brought new energy to the home crowd with two wins on Monday, following up their 9-2 win over the Czechs in just seven ends with a 6-3 win over Switzerland’s Mirjam Ott.

After the Swiss game, Danish skip Lene Nielsen said, “We’ve never beaten Mirjam before. We just hung in there all the way to the end and it paid off again today. The shot Mirjam had to play in the last end was really difficult”.

Earlier, the Swiss had beaten Korea - who are still winless after a further two losses on Monday - by 8-6.

In the morning session, Russia’s Liudmila Privivkova beat an out-of-sorts Patti Lank of USA by 11-4, finishing off with a score of four in the seventh end, but the situation reversed in the evening, with USA handing Germany their second defeat of the day, by 9-4, and Russia losing out to Norway, who recovered from 7-1 down after three ends to score in each of the last four ends for a 9-8 win.

After their recovery victory, USA vice-skip Caitlin Maroldo said, “it always feels good to win and start hitting better. Hopefully, this will roll us into playing well again tomorrow”. The USA brought on their alternate, former world champion Debbie McCormick, and Maroldo said, “she adds just that little bit more that we need. Just having a world champion play with you is incredible. You can’t replace experience”.
